I HATE MONDAYS … Is There Hope for Me?
Yes! Work can be fun. Let me help you fall in love with Mondays again.
Why is Payday the Only Part of My Job That Excites Me?
Certainly, it’s a thrill to see your direct deposit notice on the 15th and 31st of each month. It means that your car loan, mortgage payment, or kids’ braces are covered for another month. It’s an affirmation that you’ve done a good job and that your work and loyalty are valued. Your paycheck should also be an inspiration to keep moving forward, with your eyes on the prize.
But if the other 22 days of the month are miserable for you, you owe it to yourself to find out why.
If you can’t quite put a finger on the cause for your unhappiness, there are factors you can consider.
- Is this melancholy relatively new, or have you always felt this way?
- Are there personal conflicts with some of your co-workers or upper management?
- Are you consumed with worry that you are not meeting performance standards, or that the work is too difficult for you?
Do I Have to Be a Jerk to Get Ahead in This Place?
It’s hard to pour your life into a company and find yourself unappreciated or disrespected. It’s worse when you see others getting ahead whose skills, integrity, and character are lacking. Wondering where you’ve “gone wrong” is not an uncommon experience.
I feel like a character in “The Office.” But it’s not funny.
Before you decide to go over to the dark side {break bad}, give yourself a chance to evaluate your current situation.
- Are there realistic opportunities for advancement within your organization?
- Would you have to compromise your values to move ahead in this company?
- Is this the “nature of the beast” in your chosen profession, or would another company be a better match for you?
Did I Choose the Wrong Major or Career?
Everyone second-guesses choices. You’ve coveted the sizzling steak being delivered to the table next to you, while awaiting your salmon and veggie plate. And who hasn’t driven out of the dealership wishing they’d chosen a different color or audio package?!
The stakes (not steaks) are higher when you are doubting your choice of career, which probably began when you declared a major sophomore year. Maybe the internet was hardly a factor at the time. It’s not that simple to change course, especially when you still have student loans.
Am I stuck forever in a career path based on a decision made a 20-year-old?!
If you are consumed by self-doubt regarding your career path, take time to review that path.
- What influenced your choice of major: parents, prestige, passion, or potential income?
- Is your current career path what one would expect for that major?
- Have new technologies emerged that excite you?
- If you could do it over again, what direction would you take?
THOMMI’S TAKE
When I was working my way up the corporate ladder, I began to dread Mondays. I chose an undergraduate major just to prove a point to a naysaying professor, and I was in a role where I was unfulfilled. However, I was filled to the brim with student loans (sigh!).
